Heisman Trophy:
Every year college football players preform their hearts out for their teams so they have a chance to play in the National Championship. There is another reason players play hard all year and that is to win the Heisman Trophy which is given to the best player in the NCAA. Every year there is usually a clear front runner all year that everyone knows will win the Heisman, but no this year this year is a real race and is completely up for grabs. It seemed at the beginning of the year that Johnny Manziel was looking like he would repeat this year and right behind him was going to be Marcus Mariota from Oregon. As the season has moved on that isn’t the case anymore Manziel has had a few hiccups and Mariota is out because of the lose to Stanford. Right the front-runner of the Trophy looks to be Jameis Winston from Florida State, but that could end very quickly as Winston is right in the middle of a molestation case that could drop him out of the race completely. If charges are brought to Winston that would make the new front runners be Bryce Petty from Baylor and Jordan Lynch from believe it or not Northern Illinois. With all of this happening in the world of college football it actually makes the Heisman interesting to watch in a long time.
The BCS is Tough:
With the college football season rapidly coming to an end the most exciting time of the season is upon us. Bowl season is here and that means the BCS National Championship talk is in full force. For years it was almost certain that an SEC team was going to the championship and going to win it all. This year is a little bit different with classic Iron bowl (Alabama and Auburn) this weekend things could really be shaken up. Florida State and Ohio state are 2 and 3 in the rankings and are licking their chops at this game because if Auburn can beat Alabama that would eliminate Alabama from the title game for the first time in 4 years. In turn means that for the first time in 10 years there would not be an SEC team in the National Championship game, which personally to me is a great thing for college football. Not only that it could really start a trend in not having SEC teams dominate college football completely. This is the last year of the controversial BCS ranking system and next year there will be a playoff system, which potentially means that there can really be a few different teams in the coming years in college football. For someone like me that loves college football this is something I am really looking forward too! Exciting things are happening in the world of sports and in the world of college football and I can’t wait for it.
Hazing:
Just last week I found out the Gamma Sigma chapter of Sigma Chi at Auburn University had their chapter suspended for extreme bouts of hazing of their pledges. As a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity it deeply saddens me to hear such a historic chapter of my fraternity in this much trouble. The debate that arises is the case of hazing, which in the last 10 years has been a very popular topic within any type of organization but none like within fraternities. Between this and the Miami Dolphins case of hazing it puts thoughts into my head on what I think of hazing in my personal life. As a fraternity member I obviously have thoughts on what hazing is and if it is right or not. The response I have to that is I think there is different types of hazing in the case of Auburn and the Miami Dolphins that’s really bad hazing, but in my argument I think there is good hazing. There is a type that can be productive and can build character in a man or women. It doesn’t bring someone down, it doesn’t embarrass or humiliate a person, but rather has a reason and an end goal. I think that this type of “hazing” is seen through everyday life as well and I do believe it helps people become better for it. All I am saying is be careful on what you do and realize that hazing can be a beneficial thing if used and preform correctly.
Awful Things Happen to the Best People:
The beginning of the NBA season was a really an amazing time for the city of Chicago because their hero was returning to the court. Derrick Rose after missing the entire 2012-2013 season was back and ready to compete. He came on early struggled in numbers with only averaging around 10 points his first few games. As the season was moving along this team seemed to be moving right along in the right direction until Saturday night. The city of Chicago once again was left jaw dropped when Derrick Rose torn his meniscus in his right knee and now is out for the season. With one fell swoop Derrick Rose is out and the Bulls chances on winning a NBA championship are out as well. This team was solely built around Derrick Rose this season and with out him they do not stand a chance against the Heat or Pacers in the Eastern conference. With all that being said we should not look at the team aspect of this but look at it from a personal level. A human can only go through the mental state so many times, and for him last season was really as tough as it gets. The real question is how does he over come it twice, or can he ever get back to the player that he once was a couple seasons ago. It really is a shame that such bad things happen to people like Derrick Rose and the city of Chicago is behind you and we all hope something good comes from this in the end. Get well soon Derrick!
When Did Music Become So Dangerous
With all the recent deaths and emergency room trips coming out of music festivals and night clubs it really brings the question are this festivals to dangerous for concertgoers? The world of EDM (electric dance music) has always had a bad rap with drug abuse, but with the recent explosion of the music it has never been so commercialized and now more and more people are knowing the dangerous of MDMA based drugs. It seems that after every big music festival there is a story of a MDMA over dose that occurs and it brings cause and concern will this every get better. My question is with the growing craze of EDM music will the drugs stop and do you control or try and stop it at its source. Well if this my choice I would say and/ or suggest you are not going to stop it at these music festivals due to the fact that most of these festivals have over 100,000 people attending so then whats the next step. The answer to this question needs to be in regards of the safety of the people that are going to be taking this said drugs. As awful as that may sound it’s the truth. People are going to be taking these drugs so I think that there needs to be more emphases on the safety and possible drug testing kits, higher medical staff on site, or quicker medical response times. It’s hard to stop and 200,000 people and give them each an extremely extensive search that isn’t practical. The key word for this is safety and how do you increase it. These festivals are supposed to be fun and making it a dangerous place is not what they are about. Hopefully by the next festival rolls around they have it figured out.
